OUR PARTICIPANT SAFETY POLICY
1. OUR COMMITMENT
Basketball Magic Australia is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and enjoyable environment for all participants in our programs, tours, scrimmages and events. We take our legal and moral responsibilities seriously and will take all reasonable steps to protect children, young people and adults from harm.
We comply with:
- The Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998 (NSW)
- The Child Safe Standards endorsed by the Australian Human Rights Commission
- State-based Working with Children Check (WWCC) laws
- Applicable workplace health and safety laws
2. SCOPE
This policy applies to:
- All Basketball Magic Australia participants, including children, youth and adults
- Coaches, referees, officials, volunteers, staff, contractors and supervisors
- Parents, guardians and spectators attending our events
3. KEY SAFETY PRINCIPLES
- Duty of Care
All participants are entitled to train, play and compete in a safe environment. We require coaches, officials and staff to provide the highest possible standard of care at all times.
- Child Protection
- We have zero tolerance for child abuse or neglect.
- All adults working with participants under 18 must hold a current Working with Children Check (WWCC).
- We require completion of online training in child protection, harassment and discrimination.
- We follow strict procedures for reporting and responding to safety concerns, consistent with our Child Protection Policy.
- Codes of Conduct
All players, coaches, parents and spectators must follow the Codes of Conduct set by Basketball Magic Australia and Basketball Australia. Breaches may result in disciplinary action or removal from activities.
- Risk Management & Health
- Activities are supervised by trained staff and risks are actively managed.
- First aid and emergency procedures are in place at all venues.
- Participants must disclose any medical conditions and follow instructions from supervisors.
- Facilities must be respected, including no smoking, no alcohol and safe use of courts.
- Behaviour & Conduct
- No fighting, harassment, bullying, or unsafe conduct is tolerated.
- Players must call fouls honestly during scrimmages and respect the decisions of court supervisors and refs.
- Any physical or verbal altercation will result in immediate removal from activities.
- Privacy & Information
All personal information, including medical and safety records, will be handled in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and only disclosed if necessary to protect someone’s safety.
- Complaints & Reporting
- Any concerns about misconduct, abuse, or unsafe behaviour should be reported immediately to the Basketball Magic Australia Welfare Officer – info@basketballmagic.com.au
- Reports will be investigated promptly, fairly and confidentially.
- Where required, matters will be reported to police or child protection authorities in line with mandatory reporting laws.
4. LEGAL DISCLAIMER
Participation in basketball activities involves inherent risks. By attending our programs, participants (and parents/guardians of minors) acknowledge these risks and agree to follow all safety instructions. A signed waiver and consent form is required for participation in Basketball Magic Australia activities.
5. REVIEW
This policy will be reviewed every two years or after any significant safety incident, ensuring compliance with law and best practice.
